This is the public website of the Mathematical Cognition Group, an informal collaborative group of research students, postdocs and academics. We are mostly based at Loughborough University, but now also have members at Bristol, Leicester, Nottingham and York.
Our research focuses on the cognitive processes that underlie mathematics learning and performance. Specific interests range from investigating the development of early numeracy to looking at the reasoning behaviour of research-active mathematicians. Members of the group have recently received research funding from bodies including the British Academy, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, the ESRC, the Leverhulme Trust, the Nuffield Foundation and the Royal Society.
We meet monthly to discuss recent journal articles, our own individual work, and our collaborative research.
On these pages you can find some information about our research interests, the grants we currently hold, and our publications. If you would be interested in coming to some of our meetings, please email Camilla Gilmore.
In 2007 we organised an interdisciplinary workshop on mathematical thinking, funded by the British Academy, the Nuffield Foundation and Routledge. Recordings of the talks at the workshop are still available online.
