The Mathematics Education Centre (MEC) hosts a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, known as sigma. This status was awarded in recognition of the MEC's longstanding excellence in the delivery of university-wide mathematics support and was won collaboratively with Coventry University. Via the Mathematics Learning Support Centre, we provide support which is distinctive and of high quality to any students needing help with basic mathematics and statistics.

Within the MEC there is an overt and rigorous research agenda. Staff are active in a number of research domains, with a particular focus on Mathematics Education in the Higher Education sector. Information about current interests and projects can be found here.

Staff in the MEC are responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of the teaching of mathematics and statistics for most undergraduate engineering students. This teaching is shared with staff in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, with whom we work very closely. Staff in the MEC are at the forefront of, and contribute to, developments nationally in the teaching, learning and support of mathematics and statistics in Higher Education.

MEC receives 'Working towards Silver Standard Award, 2011/12' and Trish Owen receives 'Environmental Hero Award 2011/12' in the Green Impact sustainable accreditation scheme.
